I have had a annoying itchy scalp all of my life.  Growing up I tried shampoo after shampoo and nothing ever worked. When I started attending school for holistic care I learned a lot about all the chemicals in mainstream shampoos and once I stopped using then and switched to natural shampoos my scalp got better. It was still itchy sometimes, just not as much and as often before I stopped using the chemical laced shampoos.

A side effect of my itchy scalp was dandruff and I was always self conscious about it being all over my clothing. Dandruff, is flaky dead skin cells that come from a dry scalp and scratching. Shampoo is not the only thing that can cause itchy, there could be medical reason as well; like eczema, psoriasis, fungus or bacterial infections. If your diet is deficient in vitamin D and B and zinc this can also cause you to have a dry scalp.

The great thing is there are lots of natural home remedies to combat this issue. Below you will find some that I tried and continued to use.

Baking soda

You can use baking soda to create a natural scalp exfoliating mask. Apply a paste of baking soda and water on the scalp and let sit for 2 mins and rinse with warm water.

( do as often you feel you need to, I recommend twice a week)

 Aloe Vera

Apply all over scalp 3 to 5 mins before your regular washing.

 Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Works wonders getting rid of excess yeast.

Excess yeast can cause itchy scalp.

 

Bananas and Coconut oil

Yes, your reading that right I said BANANAS! They are abundant with amino acids and antioxidants that provide nutrients to your skin and hair. Bananas are also full of mineral potassium that moisturizes and re-hydrates your hair. Pure coconut oil will soothe  and calm your scalp. ( I use ripe bananas)

Oranges & Cinnamon….Great for the soul!

Throughout the winter months I tend make and drink a lot of hot teas. One of my favorite morning teas is my cinnamon orange tea. It warms the soul!
If you would like to try it my recipe is below.

What you need:
Green tea bag
Cinnamon sticks
Cinnamon loose
Sweetener
Water
Mug
Oranges

1.) Add a plain green tea and 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks in a mug 2.) Microwave 8 or 10 ounces of water for 2 minute

3.) Steep 2 mins

4.) sprinkle some cinnamon and your choice sweetener. Stir.

5.) Cut 2 or 3 slices from orange and squeeze juice from remaining orange into cup.

Commence to warming your soul!

***Cinnamon will keep your mouth fresh by killing unwanted bacteria and cinnamon is known to boost memory and alertness.***

***Oranges are an wonderful source of vitamin C. They are also a very good source of dietary fiber.***

Luna’s Story: Depression, Food and The Light at the End of The Tunnel…Part 2

END OF PART 1

I asked,

             Where are you and what are you doing?

She said,

I am trying to figure out how to kill myself and not feel the pain.

 

Finally my spirit said loud and clear to me that this is the right time and I asked Luna if she wanted to come live with me, I would put her on a train today if she wants to come. She said yes. A week later I picked up Luna from the train station. She looked sad, lonely lost and as if she had not slept in years, even though according to our phone conversation while she was still on train she was sleeping 10 to 12 hrs a day. When I greeted her and gave her hug I could see in her eyes a spark of hope. The first week she was hear went by so fast and consume us with work and working on our first short film, so the elephant in the room, stayed in the room. I continued to pray about how and when to bring it up. Finally a break through or a nightmare, as I thought it was at first. My mom gave Luna some tough love ( Tough love does not work on everybody)

Pray before you attempt to help anyone, you may not be vessel or lighthouse they need.

 

Boy, was I wrong it was not a nightmare, My mother Annie was the lighthouse or the vessel Luna needed. I will not go into their private conversation, but the very next week Luna got her self sign up for a 8 week intensive counseling sessions at church. She work diligent during those eight weeks and sometime in between the 8 weeks she asked me for help as well. At this time I was about 9 months into my training in Alternative medicine, Luna knew this so she asked me to help her find something for her mood and something to help her sleep. After talking to Luna for several days about past and present medical history and in depth personality questionnaire, her and I together began to do our research. What we both thought would be best for her is one St. John wort every other day and a small dosage of Melatonin at night. After she did some more of her own research she decide to start taking the St.John Wort and Melatonin and by the end of the first week her mood was more balance and she was having less suicidal thoughts. Falling asleep was becoming easier and she was starting to wake up around 10 or 11 am instead of the normal 5 or 6 pm.

After a couple of months on the St. Johns Wort, Melatonin, and the continue counseling she was able to start working on a more healthy relationship with food. She started to realize that her unhealthy relationship with food was also contributing to her depression. She started to realize that certain foods would elevated her depression and others would help alleviate her depression. So with this knowledge we together began to work on this, I would hold her accountable and point out to her when she might be possible slipping into what we called “Depression eating” ( this method of accountability helps Luna, it may not help you. Do your own research/ trail and error)

Jump to the present time, three years later Luna is doing wonderful and she is thriving. She is writing a book, creating three different interactive stories on the Episode Interactive Platform, her and I started our film company Lady Girl Films and just produced our first film, she has gotten back in to acting and is currently working and booking roles out of Savannah and Atlanta. Her most recent film you can see her in is Some Freaks and several other films coming out ( Check her IMDB profile to see a list of her films, you can find her under LUNA MUNROE) . She has also start taking photos again, now does Luna still have depression, yes I don’t know if you ever get “RID” of depression but it is under control. Right now Luna only takes Melatonin 3 to 4 days a week and the St. John Wort when she feels depression coming on, she pays attention to her moods and eating pattern.

Hope this helps someone in some way. This is my first time writing this way… telling someone story, I hope inspires someone!

Elevated Luna Depression Foods

  • Lots of added sugar
  • Over consumption of fast food
  • Over consumption chocolate Example: Reese peanut cups etc…
  • Lots of Refined carbohydrates
  • Over consumption of  Processed foods

 

Alleviate Luna Depression Foods

  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Avocados
  • Tea
  • Fruit
  • Soup
  • Turkey
  • Making sure to stay well hydrated

Well Melatonin is a natural helpful sleep aid, there can be side effects such as;

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness(

St. John Wort is helpful for depression, there can have side effects

  • Allergic reactions
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased sensitivity to the sun — especially if you are fair-skinned and taking large doses
  • Upset stomach

Don’t use if pregnant.

 

 

Got Mucus?

I have personally suffered from allergies since as far back as I can remember. I have noticed that as I got older, my allergies got progressively better…anyone else experience this?  When I am having a really bad attack it is almost and always accompanied with MUCUS… the word just makes me cringe. Now throughout my research and holistic training I have learned that mucus is always present, we just don’t notice it until we have excess mucus and excess mucus does not just occur because of allergies or colds. Mucus can and does happen throughout the year which is cause by your habits and the type of environment you live in.

The three most common ways you can tell  if you have excess mucus are; If you have a wet cough, sinuses or frequent throat clearing.

Before I move forward I should give you the definition of Mucus, Mucus:  Is the slippery, stringy fluid produced by many lining tissues in the body. It is a protective fluid that traps irritant like dust and bacteria.

The following are natural remedies that work for me. If you try them please comment at give me an update.

1.) Hot shower

Turn on the shower 5 to 10 mins before you get in and allow the steam to build up . Once the steam has built up drop 15 to 20 drops of menthol essential oils before you enter the shower. *** I personally like peppermint and eucalyptus***

2.) Diffuse Essential oils in you home, bedroom at night. Below is a list that I use.

Peppermint ( don’t use is you have gallbladder problem)

Tea Tree

Rosemary

Eucalyptus ( don’t allow undiluted to touch you skin)

Lavender

3.) Drink Chamomile tea before bed

4. Check the foods you are eating

(Sometimes excess wheat can cause excess mucus build up)

Luna’s Story: Depression, Food and The Light at the End of The Tunnel…Part 1

Good Morning Beautiful People!

Just a little insight on me, before I write any blog I pray for inspiration and for the past couple of days my sister’s name LUNA has been popping up. So I asked for her permission to tell a small chapter in the story of her life book. This is written with her full permission and support, we hope that her story will encourage you.

Meet Luna, my baby sister!

She is the youngest of five, Luna joined our family at the tender age of 20…lol! That age old say you can’t choose your family…well is crap! You can choose your family and she choose us and we choose her. I meet Luna when she was eighteen and were both apart of a online create writing group, that was hosted on a create website ( Kinda like Facebook for artist.) After a few weeks on this site I posted a call looking for someone to collaborate with me on a screenplay I was working on and Luna answered the call. So we went about setting up our Skype writing sessions meet up times and dates to work on the screenplay. From our very first Skype writing session I knew something was different about her. The way she held herself in the chair, how her faced look strained and worn out as if she was trying to just keep it together,  but the secret, even though I did not know what it was, was pouring out of her eyes, her monotone voice and the need for constant reassurance. I knew something was up.

To every Skype writing session we had on the calendar that she management to make it to her eyes look as if she had just got done crying or was on the verge of crying. She also would miss many of our sessions and when I would ask her about it she would just say oh nothing or I forgot. While my type A personality would normal cringe, I let it slide because my spirit told me this is not the right time. I also notice every time we had a Skype sessions she would eat the entire time and it was the same thing every time… stacks of peanut butter and jelly sandwich, 2lbs bag of Reese Peanut Butter Mini Cups and the occasional chocolate chip muffin. Once again I did not ask about this because my spirit told me this is not the right time.

We went back and forth with this dance for the next two years.  Then one day Luna just disappeared…

She missed all of our scheduled writing sessions for a week, I was worried , I was EXTREMELY worried. I called the number she gave me for four days straight, as I watch the hand tick away on the clock in my bedroom I grew more nervous with every click. Finally an answer, groggy, sleepy and monotone voice said… Hello. LUNA I screamed, yeah she said, where are you and what are you doing I asked. She said in a soft and monotone voice… TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO KILL MYSELF, BUT NOT FEEL THE PAIN…

I was caught off guard like a deer in headlights.

My Love Language: An Introduction

Hello and welcome beautiful people to my first blog post. I am not new to writing and blogging, but I am new to this type of blogging. Blogging about my real internal self and showing venerability to people I have yet to met or see. So I figured as a introduction to me I decide to open up about my love language; food. I know some of you are thinking, that’s not one of the five love languages; but to me it is.

I am a caretaker by nature, what that means is taking caring others comes natural to me, it is easy, cooking and feeding people are apart of that for me. This you will become more aware of as we get to know each other. I look at food as nourishment and a pretty awesome create outlet. When I see someone with a unhealthy relationship with food whether it be overeating, under eating or obsessive counting all calories it saddens me. I feel they are missing out on one of the many joys of life. While most people find food to be a chore, they cant stand to have to prepare it. I on relish in it, it brings me joy to organize, shop, plan, chop, mince, stir, prepare, serve and clean up, it is all worth it! Why you ask…because of the awesome conversation, laughter and smiles on the faces I am serving the meal to that I have put my heart and soul in.

Now some of you will read this post and just feel ever so pressed to comment that food is not a love language… let me go ahead and save you some typing by answering your comment now. No where in this blog did I say I support the under or over consumption food, nor do I believe you can look at someone a judge them.

BANANA OATMEAL BREAKFAST MUFFINS

Nourishment you will need
  • 2 ½ cups old-fashioned oats ( 1.5 cups ground, 1 cup whole)
  • 4 large overripe bananas
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 2 tsp  vanilla
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp  sea salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place oats on a baking sheet and toast until lightly browned, stirring once (about 4 to 6 minutes). Let cool to room temperature.
  2. Divide oats into portions of 1.5 cups and 1 cup
  3. Turn oven heat up to 350 degrees.
  4. Place 1.5 cups of oats in a food processor and blend until they reach a rough, flour like consistency.
  5. Mash bananas
  6. Add eggs, applesauce, almond milk and vanilla to mashed well bananas Mix to combine.
  7. Add dry ingredients and oats to wet ingredients and mix well. allow mixture to sit for 5 mins
  8. Use muffin wrappers
  9. Bake at 325 for about 20 minutes or until done.

Important Recipe Information

Bananas: They are rich in pectin, a soluble dietary fiber and detoxifying agent

** healthy bowel movement**

Oatmeal: Oats contain soluble and insoluble fiber which helps to lower cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar.

Eggs: Help raise HDL ( Good Cholesterol) They are also rich in lutien and zeaxanthin.

** Eye Health**

Almond Milk: It has no cholesterol and has vitamin D and E ( while a lot of almond on the market contains mostly water)

Try making your own ( while be a future post)

Sea Salt: Great sources of sodium and electrolytes.

Cinnamon: Anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and immunity boosting.
